Our 2014-15 Year-in-Review summarizing some of our great accomplishments from the past 12 months.
The Auxiliary is a group of over 200 enthusiastic active and inactive members who are committed to providing needed volunteer services to Cornwall Community Hospital. In 2013, that amounted to 17,000 hours of service.
Whether it is operating the Gift Shop, selling H.E.L.P.P. (Hospital Equipment Lottery Project for People) tickets or organizing fundraising events, all members participate to their full ability.
It is knowing that their contributions positively affect the care and services patients, families, visitors and staff receive that motivates this wonderful Volunteer Team. Significant donations are made every year to CCH for the purchase of needed hospital equipment, along with a monthly donation to the Mental Health Unit and annual Cornwall Campus student bursaries at the St. Lawrence Community College, Nursing Faculty.
“Volunteers are not paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.” (author unknown)
The Auxiliary is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to volunteerism and fundraising. It supports the provision of excellence in health care delivery and the effectiveness of hospital services at Cornwall Community Hospital.

The Women’s Auxiliary of the Cornwall General Hospital was founded in 1949 by nineteen dedicated women. They believed that, under their leadership, the Women’s Auxiliary could make meaningful financial and service contributions to patients, families and staff. A “Traveller’s Diary”, illustrating the history (1949-2004) of the Auxiliary at the Cornwall General Hospital has been created. This album has been placed in the Cornwall Community Museum.
In 1950, the first Tuck Shop was opened at the Main Entrance and became an immediate success. 2013 saw the opening of the renamed and relocated Gift Shop at the McConnell Main Entrance. It is an inviting and welcoming sight as patients, visitors and staff enter the building. In June 2014, the Second Street Tuck Shop will close and a new chapter in the history of the Auxiliary will begin. Also, in 1950, the Tuck Cart started making rounds in the patient areas, providing patients an opportunity to buy small items. This service still continues today.
In 1975, the Auxiliary began distributing bursaries to nursing students. Over the years, this has evolved whereby the Auxiliary gives annual bursaries to St. Lawrence Community College, Cornwall Campus. 1975 was also the year that saw the first edition of Aux Vox, the Auxiliary’s publication.
In 1989, men began joining the Auxiliary and the name changed to The Auxiliary to the Cornwall General Hospital. Ten years later, in 1999, an Auxiliary was formed at the Hotel Dieu Hospital. Co-existing side by side, it was a natural progression to merge and form one Auxiliary in 2004, at the same time as the two hospitals were amalgamating. The organization is proudly known today as The Auxiliary to the Cornwall Community Hospital.
Today, our organization is pleased to offer the following:
While these services generate funds and provide assistance to health care users and staff, the Auxiliary supplements these activities with external events (see ‘Events’). These events are held in the community and open to the public.
We are always looking for volunteers. Not only is training and orientation provided, but this is a wonderful opportunity to give back to your community and to make lasting, lifelong friendships.
Every volunteer is expected to commit to a monthly minimum of 4 hours of volunteer time and we will match you to your preferred volunteer activity.
Once you indicate your interest, (see ‘Contact Us’ below), someone will be in touch to arrange an interview. Further requirements will be discussed during the interview.
When the application process has been completed, you will be required to pay an annual fee ($5.00) to maintain your membership.
